Curlyheads is a charming “bush Clematis” that forms attractive, non-vining mounds. It produces pale yellow flowers in the spring, followed by showy seedheads that ripen in the summer.

Flowering period

In central North Carolina, flowering begins in April and lasts two to three weeks.

How to grow

Curlyheads are easy to grow in sun to part shade. Even though it’s native to soils with a high pH, it is very adaptable and will grow in almost any well-drained soil.

Care and maintenance

Cut plants down to ground level any time after a hard frost.

Where to plant

It is the perfect plant for the front of flower beds and rock gardens, where its flowers and attractive seedheads will be most visible.

When to plant

Anytime the ground isn’t frozen.

Spacing

12 to 18 inches apart when planting in a group.

When will my plant flower?

Plants are at least three years old and of flowering size. Plants purchased and planted before March will flower in April.

Native habitat and range

Clematis ochroleuca is native to dry woodlands and woodland borders, generally in soils with a high pH. It’s primarily found growing in the piedmont region from central Maryland to eastern-central Georgia.

Source and origin

Plants are grown from seeds collected off plants in our stock beds. The provenance of our original plants is unknown.
